With his debut double album for No Silence Records, pianist Lukas Sternath presents a deeply personal and compelling program dedicated to the music of Franz Schubert and Franz Liszt. A multiple prize winner at the 2022 ARD International Music Competition and BBC Next Generation Artist, Sternath combines lyrical sensitivity, technical mastery, and remarkable musical maturity throughout this recording. At the center of the album are five Schubert songs in Liszt’s celebrated piano transcriptions, alongside Schubert’s iconic Wanderer Fantasy. The second disc is devoted to Liszt’s Années de Pèlerinage – Italie, culminating in the monumental Fantasia quasi Sonata: Après une lecture du Dante. For Sternath, singing lies at the heart of his musical approach. Inspired by his early years with the Vienna Boys Choir, he sings the songs while practicing in order to transfer their natural breath, phrasing, and vocal character to the piano. The result is a performance of exceptional intimacy and expressive depth. The album revolves around themes of travel, searching, and the feeling of being an outsider. Sternath approaches Liszt’s virtuosity not as an end in itself, but as an expression of inner movement and emotional depth. This outstanding debut recording introduces one of the most exciting young pianists of his generation, bringing together Schubert’s lyricism and Liszt’s visionary imagination in a truly compelling way.
